Climate Health Now's Monthly Newsletter: November 2024

Hello ,

We know there is a LOT on people's minds right now -- above all else, if you haven't already, please VOTE! And if you are on social media, please share this video on voting for climate and health made by several allied organizations.

We are keeping things short this month -- please read on for a list of upcoming CHN events as well as some recaps of October's events. Please note that we mistakenly advertised the date of our upcoming healthcare sustainability webinar - it is on Wednesday, November 6 @12-1p and will focus on making your health workplace more sustainable -- register here!

Last but not least, for our Giving Tuesday 2024 Climate Health Now fundraiser, we are organizing a raffle that anyone who donates will be entered into! We'd love your help -- do you have something exciting or fun that you could donate as a raffle item? We're thinking: an Airbnb stay, tickets to an event, a spare EV (just kidding), membership in a wine or chocolate club, or something else. Please let Ashley McClure know -- ashley@climatehealthnow.org.

Sincerely,

Shuinn Chang, Margie Chen, Ashley McClure, Amanda Millstein, Brenda Nuyen- the Climate Health Now Statewide Leadership Team

SPOTLIGHT ON PROPOSITION 4

Proposition 4 (also known as the Safe Drinking Water, Wildfire Prevention, Drought Preparedness, and Clean Air Bond Act of 2024) would issue $10 billion in bonds to finance projects for drought, flood, and water infrastructure, wildfire and forest resilience, coastal resilience, extreme heat mitigation, biodiversity and nature-based climate solutions, climate smart agriculture, park creation and outdoor access, and clean energy programs.

Climate change is an existential threat to health. However, communities of color and low-income bear the biggest burden. With Prop 4, 40% of the funds will go to front-line communities who are hit hardest by extreme heat, air pollution, and climate disasters, specifically committing to climate justice.

Check out Hina Fullar's letter to the editor in support of Prop 4 here!

ACTION OPPORTUNITY

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has just released a long-overdue proposal for a new rule to better protect workers from the dangers of extreme heat. As health care workers, we know that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can be deadly - yet too many workers still lack basic protections like regular water breaks, access to shade, and rest periods.

Please click the button below to take action -- and help ensure that all workers are protected from the escalating threat of extreme heat. You can customize the comments -- and please be sure to add any examples of how extreme heat has impacted the health of your community or patients.
